During summer school, thirty teachers in fifteen middle
and high schools in Boston Public Schools, San Diego Public
Schools, Marion County (FL) Public Schools, and Brevard County
(FL) Public Schools participated in a research project involving
the use of audiobooks to improve student learning.
In each school, students were divided into groups for independent
reading each day, with some groups using audiobook support
as they read along in the text and some groups using print
texts only. Over four hundred students participated in the
study.
Use these findings to support grant applications, for
staff development, and to demonstrate compliance with the
research requirements of No Child Left Behind. |
More Preliminary
Results Show That:
• SRI scores for students supported by Recorded Books rose
14% more than for students who read with print only.
• Students who used audiobook support for their reading of
several novels scored an average of 94.38% on their Accelerated
Reader™ comprehension tests, while students who read without
audio support scored an average of 73.33% [Brevard County
FL). (See page 52 for more information on AR research.)
• In a four week/four days per week program, middle school
students who listened to audiobook modeled readings for fluency
practice raised their scores by five words per minute more
than their peers who only practiced from text with no modeled
reading (Marion County, FL).
