She teaches the evening scholarship classes. Here are some of her stories about a few of her students: "I expect a lot from all students and they do deliver for me... "I also expect them to stay on task during class." *** Seven year old student: "In tears on the first day during tell backs... "Mother was going to take her out of class... "I could see (the student) needed us, and she would not improve with mom's attitude... sooooooooooooo..... "I sat beside her and she watched what I was doing, and she felt secure enough. Now she is DOING it all!!! "After attending with mom/dad for 6 weeks, her self-confidence has made her #1 chorusing person in class... Her gains in reading overwhelmed her mom." *** One studentr spent 12 years in a refugee camp in Africa: "After not able to read a test he is able to recognize phrases by sight. *** Thirteen year old student: "Cannot read, and therefore could not respond to the tests. *** Adult student: "Coming 5 times a week. His self esteem is improving and he is even smiling... He brings homework almost daily to me and his tell backs have become fabulous!" *** Adult Student: "I thought he was going to punch me the first day of school... His cooperation after day number 2 in class has made a complete turn around... I now use him as a role model for tell-backs." *** Female student: "Last night mother and daughter could not believe what a great note-taker and fast-writer she is." *** Male Student: "After the first hour he warmed up as I sat next to him, chorused, copied and traced with him... His note taking has improved so much after 16 hours that he is now a 'role model' to other students." *** "T" age 9, grade 4, began in September. He HATED class. Reading scores showed 2.1. Our friendship warmed, and he began to try. The President quiz was his favorite. He delighted in telling the class to write full name and age plus date on sheet. On 12/29/04 he tested in Comprehension at 4.0. He brought in father last night to share results. No more low self esteem. He has been consistent in homework for the past 3 weeks. *** Despondent 5th grader: Refused to participate. After 6 hours in class she started following. When I saw stress I talked to her and made an agreement to 'reward' immediately. Each time she was on task nickels were put on her contract. She wanted to do more chorusing. Now she is first to start tell backs. She's always on task for fast writes. Said 2 hours went by too quickly. *** JEANIE'S OBJECTIVES "I try and take time to speak with EACH parent on their way out the door... "I sit, talk about their work, give suggestions about the importance of homework...
