(Click for 45min class)

2 HOUR LESSON

Course materials can be downloaded from www.write2teach.com

INSTRUCTIONS FOR TEACHERS:

Have all materials prepared ahead of time,

including printed phrase lists, 3-3-3 tests,

blank paper and writing utensils.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR STUDENTS:

Assemble all materials and find a seat.

FIRST HOUR

4-4-4 chorus, copy, trace

1. Begin 4-4-4 by playing

the MP3 audio that corresponds to

the printed lists of meaning phrases,
grammar phrases or paired phrases.

2. Each list should be played
three times each,
once during chorusing,
once during copying and
once during tracing.

3. Be a model student
by sitting or standing

next to students and chorusing,
copying and tracing with them.

If you are a good model,

the students will follow your lead.

4. Remember, talking by the teacher

is highly discouraged because it is

distracting to the students
and sets the wrong example.

If you must talk, say,
“Do what I do,”

and show them how it’s done.

5. Continue 4-4-4 for one hour

and float around the room

to mark students’ pages.

FIRST HOUR

4-4-4 chorus, copy, trace

1. When the recording begins

stand up and chorus the phrases

(say them aloud with the recording),

keeping your eyes on your paper.

If the teacher walks by,

point to the phrase on the page

that is being chorused.

2. The second time through,

copy the phrases in the blank space

next to the phrases.

3. The third time through,

trace the phrases on top
of the original printed phrases.

The pace is fast and it is important

to keep up with the recording.

It will take much practice

before you can write fast enough

to complete the entire phrase.

THAT’S OK!

The goal is to write, write, write.

SECOND HOUR

3-3-3 TEST (9 minutes)

1. Begin the second hour with a 3-3-3 test, such as the Animal Phrase tests

or President tests.

Play the audio 3 times.

3. Pair up students for tell-backs

and give them 1.5 minutes each.

4. Have students turn their papers over

to do a fast-write on the back for 3 minutes.

Be sure the students’ pens

keep moving when doing

memory triggers and fast-writes

and they keep talking during tell-backs.

They can repeat the same information

if they run out of things to write or say.

For students having great difficulty,

you can sit beside them and

have them read words from the passage

or tell any simple story about their house

family or pets.

Don’t ask them questions from the passage.

SECOND HOUR

3-3-3 TEST (9 minutes)

1. When listening to the recording

for the 3-3-3 tests

read along the first time.

2. The second time and third time,

fill in the memory triggers with

words from the sentence

the memory trigger came from.

The goal is to get as many phrases written

as possible within the space and time limit.

3. Tell-back to your partner
what you learned and take notes
during your partner’s tell-back.

4. Do a fast-write
on the back of your paper

by writing complete sentences

from your memory trigger phrases.

The goal is not perfection,

but to keep the pen moving.

5-5-5

1. Play the recording or MP3

you have chosen for 5 minutes.

It can be a recorded passage
from a text book of your choice

or the MP3 audio
from our online e-books.

2. Sit by students and model

the proper way to take notes.

3. Pair up students for tell-backs

of 2 ˝  minutes each.

4. Listen to two student tell-backs

and make a memory pattern each time

from the student’s tell-back.

5. Have students fast-write for 5 minutes

on a blank page folded in half.

6. Repeat the process
with additional passages

for the remainder of the class time.

5-5-5

1. Listen to the recording and make memory

pattern notes on a blank sheet of paper.

Write simple phrases with  2-3

meaningful words that you are hearing.

Make a memory pattern or

a web for taking notes.

2. Tell-back to your partner

from your memory pattern notes.

Write more memory pattern notes

during your partner’s tell-back.

3. Fast-write on another piece of paper

that you have folded in half into a ‘hot dog.’

Vertical phrase stacking will help you

write faster.
